Strategic
Planning: Featuring Craig Kurz, CEO, The HoneyBaked Ham Craig Kurz, third generation family member of The HoneyBaked Ham Company, will share secrets of his company’s success at our Educational Program. The HoneyBaked Ham Company was established in 1957 by Harry Hoenselaar in Detroit, Michigan. Harry invented and patented the first spiral-slicing machine and process, creating a revolutionary product of its time along with a unique curing and cooking/smoking procedure for a one-of-a kind, high quality, bone-in smoked ham which quickly became a hit in the Detroit area. In 1966, Harry Hoenselaar’s daughter and son-in-law opened a second store in Parma, Ohio and during the next twenty years, the family expanded the company to other Ohio cities and key markets outside of the state. Grandson Craig Kurz became employed full time with his family’s business in 1984. Twenty two years later, there are four divisions operating across the country, each run by second and third generation founding family members and now operate more than 310 family owned retail stores and another 70 HoneyBaked Ham Company franchise locations nationwide. As the current President of The HoneyBaked Ham National Board of Directors, Craig Kurz brings strong strategic planning, business building, consumer insight and branding experience to his family business. Mr. Kurz, a 2003 Entrepreneurial Fellow in the Thomas C. Page Center for Entrepreneurship at Miami University and a trained brain at Eureka Ranch in Cincinnati, a think tank that provides Fortune 100 companies with inventing, training, success forecasting and consulting services, will offer insight on the value of risk taking, suggest tools for encouraging open communication, recommend strategies for knowing your customers and will stress the importance of seeking opportunity without diluting your brand.
Join us on May 18th as we welcome Craig
Kurz to Columbus.

Women in Family Business Peer Group Family Business Center Office in the Neighborhood Center Good to Great author Jim Collins found, in his study of 28 companies that he and his research team determined had made the leap from good to great that “the executives who ignited transformation from good to great did not first figure out where to drive the bus and then get people to take it there. No, they first got the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) and then figured out where to drive it. They said in essence, "Look, I don’t really know where we should take this bus. But I know this much: If we get the right people on the bus, the right people in the right seats, and the wrong people off the bus, then we’ll figure out how to take it someplace great.” For those of you who strive to lead great companies, I encourage
you to read or reread Chapter 3 of Good to Great and
join us for what promises to be an outstanding family business
conversation.

Transition the
Leadership of your Family Business into an Integrated Management
Team Featuring Jason Mlicki, President, Mlicki, Inc. and John Baker of Sequent It is important for leaders, family members and employees of family business to anticipate the need for change and to prepare for it. During our September Educational Program, Jason Mlicki of Mlicki, Inc., and John Baker of Sequent will use the transitional experience of a family business, Mlicki, Inc., to demonstrate the elements of transition and the plan that helped them accomplish the change. Understanding the key components of transition; leadership, accountability and behavior, is vital to the successful implementation of the change process. During this program we will investigate the issues of family succession, and show how Mlicki, Inc., moved the company from the founding generation to the next generation of leadership while managing growth and enhancing the effectiveness of the Mlicki team. We will explore the importance of developing a short term strategic business plan to help govern the transition period, identifying new roles within the family business, developing strategies for holding those with new responsibilities accountable. We will also look at the factors that have an impact on the success of changes in behavior; skill acquisition of newly designated leaders, coaching, and the human dynamic of accepting and dealing with the gains and obstacles of change. Join us on Thursday, September 21, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. as we study the elements of change, explore ways to ease the transition all family businesses will some day face and hear more about Mlicki Inc.’s successful leadership transition story.
Open to the public. $ 65.00 for non-members.
