A Family Business Success Story

May 21 – 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Alumni Hall at Ohio Dominican University

1216 Sunbury Rd., Cols., OH 43219

The Dager Family will lead this exciting program and share the history of their 101-year-old ice cream business along with the lessons they’ve learned over the years. This multi-generational family business will tell you how they’ve cultivated leaders and navigated the increasingly competitive ice cream market.

Company President Luconda Dager, Vice President Joanne Dager, and their father Joe Dager, chairman, will share the knowledge and leadership lessons they’ve learned through four generations of family ownership. This informative session will cover:
  • How the Dager family grew a small confectionary into a business that now sells over five million gallons of ice cream each year
  • What it takes for multiple generations to work together and thrive in their business roles
  • The critical role succession planning plays in getting a family business to the 4th generation
  • What core values drive the company’s success
We are expecting a large turnout so be sure to RSVP to Deana Gordon at Gordon@FamilyBusinessCenter.com or 614-253-4820. The program is free for Conway Center members and $35 for non-members. Family business leaders attending for the first time may attend as our guest.

Directors’ Insight

With more than 6,000 family-owned businesses in Central Ohio and statistics that place family businesses at 80-90% of all business enterprises in North America, it’s clear to us that family businesses are a key economic driver and valuable resource in our community. In April, two highly regarded publications, the

Harvard Business Review and The Economist, both took notice of the importance of family businesses in articles that focused on the leadership lessons and enduring power of family businesses. You can check them out online at

www.economist.com or https://hbr.org/2014/04/generation-to-generation-how-to-save-the-family-business or request a copy from Deana at Gordon@FamilyBusinessCenter.com.

In addition, Columbus CEO magazine reported on the positive economic outlook of Central Ohio family businesses, sharing the results of the Conway Center’s 2015 Family Business Survey noting that, “80 percent of respondents expressed confidence in the national economy and 95 percent expressed confidence in central Ohio’s economy.  In keeping with that optimism, 68 percent of those family businesses plan on hiring in 2015. Eighty-one percent of those planning on hiring will add between one and 10 employees.” Finding, hiring, and keeping qualified employees remains a key challenge for family businesses and we will continue to share resources on this challenge through the HR Peer Group and 2016 Educational Programs.

We thank everyone who made donations to the Conway Center through the Columbus Foundation’s Big Give event on May 12-13. We appreciate your support of the Center and our efforts to help family-owned businesses grow and thrive in Central Ohio. We could not do it without your help!
