Some business owners have the mindset that if “I sign their paycheck, that’s all the motivation they need.” However, not too many people, even family members, want to work in that kind of an environment.

Eradicating Entitlement in Your Family Business

What does entitlement mean to you? Is it an annoying attitude displayed by the next gens in a family business? Is it unreasonable expectations that alienate family and non-family employees alike? Or is it a serious condition that threatens the ongoing success of a company? The answer could be “all of the above”.

Alex Freytag, of ProfitWorks, will help you further define entitlement and identify its symptoms so you can prevent and eradicate it in your own family business. Drawing on his experience working with hundreds of companies to diminish or defeat the entitlement mentality, he’ll share examples of how these issues can impact an organization and its employees.

Freytag will outline how family business leaders can overcome entitlement through an interactive session which will include family business owner Randy Dupler from Dupler Office. Join us to learn techniques that can be immediately implemented in your family business.

Be Prepared! Fraud Awareness and Preventative Measures to Protect Your Family Business

As more business information moves online, it is becoming increasingly important to protect your company’s and your customers’ assets and information from fraud and cyber crime.

Representatives from Conway Center Service Provider FirstMerit Bank will help you learn how to spot and prevent fraud in your business during this quarterly roundtable. You’ll learn best practices and get expert tips for preventing internal and external fraud from FirstMerit’s Mike Kramer, SVP, Business Banking Region Manager; Susan Hoffman, Treasury Management Team; and Chris Haury and Susie Brinza, Credit Card Processing.

The 7th Annual Family Business Night at the Columbus Clippers is coming up soon so mark your calendars! Director’s Insight

I’m happy to share some exciting news with you. The Conway Center for Family Business recently announced that Deana Gordon has been named Managing Director of the Conway Center, Jill Hofmans is now Assistant Director and Hyla Skudder is now the Publications Director.

Deana has been with the Center since 2008 and helped us grow to more than 170 family-owned business and 34 service provider members, led the expansion of our educational programming series and networking events, and has overseen the growth of our annual awards program.

Jill, previously the Center’s Executive Coordinator, manages the Center’s Peer Group programs and member outreach, and assists with special event planning and Center operations. Hyla directs the design and production of all printed communications for the Center, ensures brand consistency across all media, produces print and online advertising and the Center’s website, and maintains the Center’s photo archives.

Each of these leaders has been instrumental in the Center’s enhanced educational programs, expanded peer group offerings, and vitality of the Center.

Please join our Trustees and Board in congratulating them and thanking them for all they’ve done (and will do) for the Conway Center.

Focused Management Experts was formed in 1986 by Dave and Laura Laslow to oversee several Burger King Restaurants that they owned. Throughout the years, the Laslows have accumulated five Burger King Restaurants, two Donatos Pizza locations, and several properties – including one office building and the buildings and land associated with many of the restaurants they own and operate. In 2012, oldest son, David, joined the company to oversee the Burger King restaurants. Laura Laslow and son, Nathan Laslow, opened a franchise concept that was new to the company, The Oilerie Olive Oil Bar, located in Grandview. Opened in the fall of 2011, the Oilerie was the first store of its kind in Central Ohio, selling high quality extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a host of gourmet food products.

Kuhns Contracting, Inc., a residential remodeling company, is celebrating its 20th year in business this year. It was started by husband and wife, Tony and Jane Kuhns, who both have family business backgrounds in residential remodeling and new home builds. Their son Luke is part of their team and has worked alongside them in various capacities since he was a teenager. The mission of Kuhns Contracting is “To be the only contractor your family will ever need; by establishing a reputation of excellence in quality and professional workmanship.” The company is a member of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) and was awarded the Angie’s List Super Service award in two categories for 2014.
